Because of its geographic location in the extreme northwest of Ireland and because access into this beautiful county is still somewhat underdeveloped, Donegal remains much less commercialised than its more famous counterpart, Kerry, in the southwest. Historically it is one of the nine counties of the ancient province of Ulster, and one of three belonging to the Republic of Ireland. Due to its peripherality and its mountainous terrain it suffers from the highest levels of unemployment and the lowest levels of infrastructure of any county in Ireland.
However this very negative is a positive from a tourism point of view as Donegal remains one of the least developed counties in Ireland and boasts some of Ireland’s finest landscapes and sandy beaches. It is also home to the largest Gaeltacht or Irish speaking area in Ireland. The county town is Lifford but Letterkenny is by far the largest town, having a population of approximately 20,000. The Irish for Donegal is Dun na nGall………….the Fort of the Foreigner, but its older and more authentic name is Tir Chonaill……..The Land of Conal.
