Day Trips at Donegal Thatched Cottages

Before heading off on various day trips we strongly recommend that clients at Donegal Thatched Cottages rest for a day or two and first explore the magic of Cruit Island itself.
For those who then feel the urge to explore further afield we suggest the following, bearing that there are dozens of equally worthy possibilities :

Glencolmcille Peninsula

Located in south west Donegal a trip to this wild and ruggedly beautiful peninsula offers an opportunity to call in to the bustling seaport of Killybegs and perhaps catch a glimpse of Europe’s largest fishing trawler. The Slieve League cliffs, dropping 300 metres into the Atlantic, are also a must as is the Folk Village in Glencolmcille, which depicts local life through the centuries back to the 18th century.

Bloody Foreland

This trip will take you northwards through the Gaeltacht areas of Bunbeg, Derrybeg and Brinlack. Follow the coast road along Bloody Foreland, so called on account of its spectacular red sunsets. You will see Inisboffin and Tory Island out to sea. Continue towards Dunfanaghy taking in Horn Head and the Atlantic Drive. Now return home through the inland route passing through Falcarragh.

Derry

It is about sixty miles from the cottages to Derry city, via Letterkenny. Derry is steeped in history, both in regard to the origins of the Loyalist/ Nationalist conflict as far back as the Siege of Derry in the 1690’s , and more recently as the home town of John Hume and the scene of Bloody Sunday. When you walk along the old walls of Derry or see the various murels in the Bogside you cannot fail to be touched. Derry is also a fine shopping centre.

Giants Causeway

This trip is not for the faint hearted as it involves a six hour return journey from the cottages to the north coast of Antrim. However this eighth wonder of the world is well worth a visit. Folklore has it that Finn Mac Cool, a giant figure from Irish mythology, constructed the Causeway as stepping stones from Ireland to Scotland.
