Gola Island Donegal cottages Donegal cottage Ireland cottages Cottages in Donegal Gola Island lies midway between Arranmore and Tory and is about 400 acres in area. It was once home to about thirty families and was an Irish speaking island. Following vast improvements in the lifestyle on the mainland the islanders left the island in the late sixties. In the last few years however there is a whole new interest in island life and Gola is humming with life during the summer months. Many of the old houses have now been restored and a number of new houses have been built. The run across from Magheragellan Pier is only about a mile long and is safe in most weather conditions. The passage into Bunbeg Harbour takes longer but is more scenic and can accommodate larger boats. Both electricity and mains water have recently been brought across to Gola. This ensures a certain basic quality of services for those hardy islanders who are increasingly being tempted to spend more time on Gola during the summer months. Gola has the advantage of two reasonably good piers and a fine sandy beach. A ferry service operates during summer months from Bunbeg Harbour.
