Inishtrahull Island Donegal cottages Donegal cottage Ireland cottages Cottages in Donegal The Hull, as the island is known locally, is Donegal’s most northerly off-shore island, lying about five miles north of Malin Head at the tip of the Inishowen Peninsula. It is about one mile long and a half a mile wide. There is some evidence of early Christian settlements dating from about the 6th century, but very little is known about the monks themselves. During the Great Famine of the mid nineteenth century the island was heavily populated and remained occupied until 1928. The remains of about a dozen houses can still be seen as can the remains of the old schoolhouse. Inishtrahull has a fine natural harbour and a good supply of fresh water from its seven spring wells. However the surrounding waters can be treacherous and subject to dense fog. Because of its location on the sea route to Scotland it was quite often a port of call for the many smaller craft plying their way to the west coast of Scotland. Nowadays no one lives on Inishtrahull and the lighthouse is fully automated. Irish thatched cottages Irish thatched cottage Donegal self catering
