In planning our dream vacation to Ireland, specifically County Donegal, we were hoping to avoid the typical tourist trap. We succeeded! The cottage was spotless, and had everything we needed (for up to 7 people!!) for a self-catering experience. As it was in the middle of our vacation, it gave us a chance to truly rest, get our laundry done, and sit by the turf fire each evening (yes, it was that chilly) to read and reconnect with each other. Just 15 minutes from the town of Dungloe, you can buy what you need for food supplies. Get a small box of laundry detergent to do your laundry. Make your purchases BEFORE your arrival so that you can immediately be at HOME and go on a fantastic walk or hike without wasting any time! The location is remote, which really worked for us. However, it was within driving distance of Glenveigh National Park and Castle–MUST SEE! The following day we drove down to Bunglass Cliffs, also know as Slieve League. We stopped in Ardara at a little shop, and the delightful merchant recommended that we take the “crappy” road since that was where we’d see the best scenery. So off we went, cutting across the county. Although it lengthened our travel time considerably, we were in no rush. You can stop at a cave (which we did not do), or stop at a peaceful, truly beautiful waterfall (which we did). There is NO charge for Slieve League, and it made an amazing day. TAKE A PICNIC!! These are the highest cliffs in Europe, three times as high as the Moher Cliffs! We were tired when we got back to the cottage, but slept so well in this pristine setting.
