Pony Trekking
Although there is a Pony Club based on Cruit Island, which meets on Sundays and organises various pony activities on the local beaches, clients of Donegal Thatched Cottages will have to travel further afield for accredited horse riding facilities. Below we give details of three fully approved riding stables.
Dunlewey Stables
Dunlewey stables are situated at the base of Mount Errigal, beside Dunlewey Lakeside Centre, in a stunningly beautiful location. This is our first recommendation, both because it is the closest to the cottages ( about 15 miles ) and because they offer clients of Donegal Thatched Cottages a special 10% discount. Officially registered. You will find full details at www.dunleweystables.com.
Dunfanaghy Stables, Dunfanaghy, Tel. 074 9100980
Based in the village of Dunfanaghy, about 25 miles north of Donegal Thatched Cottages, these officially registered riding stables open to the public at Easter and close at the end of October. They cater for all experience levels from beginner to advanced and have special rates for children under sixteen. They open 7 days of the week with first ride-outs at 10am and last ride-outs at 4pm. Advance booking is necessary, especially in high season. Riding may be booked on an hourly, half day or full day basis. Special price half hour lead- outs also available for small children.
Castleview Horse and Pony Trekking, Tel. 074 9541212
Based on the Killybegs road out of Ardara at Loughros Point, these stables are also officially registered. They open at the beginning of April and close at the end of October, and cater to all experience levels, from beginner to advanced. Rates are on an hourly or half day basis and there is no reduction for children. The riding here is entirely on the beach and is therefore dependent on the tides, so it is important to book appropriate times in advance.
